Subnautica 2 Habitat Builder — How to Unlock & Build Your Base

The Habitat Builder is your primary base-building tool. Find 2 fragments, craft it at the Fabricator, and start constructing underwater bases with rooms, power systems, vehicles, and more.

What Is the Habitat Builder?

The Habitat Builder is the hand-held tool used to construct and modify your underwater base in Subnautica 2. It is essential for mid-game progression — without it you cannot build a Processor (needed for ingots), a Vehicle Fabricator (needed for the Tadpole submarine), or a Bioreactor (needed for base power).

How to Get the Habitat Builder

You need to:

  1. Find and scan 2 Habitat Builder fragments to unlock the blueprint
  2. Craft it at your Fabricator using the recipe below

Crafting Recipe

IngredientQuantityHow to Get
Titanium× 2Mine from seafloor nodes near Lifepod
Glass× 12x Quartz → Fabricator, or 2x Salt → Processor
Basic Battery× 1Fabricator recipe (early game)
Copper Wire× 1Fabricator recipe (2x Copper)
💡 Priority: The Habitat Builder should be one of your first crafting goals. Without it, you cannot build the Processor — which means you cannot make Titanium Ingots needed for most mid-game gear.

Everything You Can Build

The Habitat Builder has 6 build categories:

1. Standard Elements (Structure)

  • Corridors, rooms, hatches, windows, ladders
  • Moonpool — docks and recharges the Tadpole submarine
  • Vehicle Fabricator — required to build the Tadpole
  • Foundation, bulkheads, reinforced walls

2. Interior Facilities

  • Fabricator — a working fabricator for your base (unlike the damaged Lifepod one)
  • Bioreactor — powers your base with organic matter (2x Titanium Ingot + 2x Copper Ingot)
  • Processor — smelts ores into ingots (required for mid-game progress)
  • Storage Lockers, Scanner Station, Biobed, Lighting

3. Exterior Facilities (Power)

  • Solar Panel — generates power in shallow areas (up to ~200m depth)
  • Thermal Plant — generates power near heat vents (deep game)
  • Hydroelectric Turbine — power from water currents
  • Spotlights, Habitat Beacon

4. Utility

  • Portable Locker, Beacon
  • Dive Elevator, Work Light
  • Portable Oxygen Generator

5. Furniture & Decor

  • Chairs, Tables, Beds, Posters, Decorative Pieces

6. Cultivation

  • Growbed — cultivate edible plants
  • Metal Farm — grow metallic plant life for materials
  • Plantable flora (Freesia Flower, Mimic Pylon, etc.)

Base Building Priority Order

If you're just starting out, build in this order:

  1. Foundation + Room + Hatch — basic shelter
  2. Fabricator — working crafting station
  3. Processor — unlocks ingot crafting
  4. Solar Panel — powers the Processor
  5. Storage Lockers — inventory management
  6. Vehicle Fabricator — build the Tadpole submarine
  7. Moonpool — dock and recharge the Tadpole
  8. Bioreactor — better long-term power

FAQ

How many fragments do I need for the Habitat Builder?

You need to scan 2 Habitat Builder fragments to unlock the blueprint.

What powers my base?

Solar Panels work in shallow water (most early bases). Bioreactors are more efficient for deeper or larger bases. Thermal Plants work near hydrothermal vents in the deep.

Can I build a base before finding the Habitat Builder?

No. The Habitat Builder is required for all base construction. Prioritize finding its fragments early.

Does the Habitat Builder need power?

The tool itself runs on a Basic Battery (included in the recipe). Your base modules require your base to have power (via Solar Panels, Bioreactor, etc.).
