Guide Background
The Heat Tolerance adaptation is what opens access to hotter water zones on the map. The route begins at the Life Pod and leads southwest toward the same general area tied to the Black Box Wanderer mission.
Before making the trip, you need the Sonic Resonator. Without it, you will not be able to clear the Viral Blooms blocking progression in this area.
Operation Steps
Step 1: Head southwest from the Life Pod
From the Life Pod, travel toward southwest 240. Stay on that heading until you reach a large formation.
If you already have the Black Box Wanderer mission active, you will be heading into that same area.
Step 2: Find the formation with the scientist table and lower opening
Look for a big structure with a scientist table near it and a hole at the bottom. Once you get close enough, descend through the opening.
This is where the first blocked section begins.
Step 3: Use the Sonic Resonator to break the first Viral Bloom
Once inside, use the Sonic Resonator to destroy the Bloom in front of you. After that, clear the other Blooms in the same area as well.
You need to remove the Viral Bloom growth here to get rid of the parasite effect affecting the zone.
Step 4: Check the Black Box if needed
After clearing the area, you can move to the Black Box and interact with it if you have not already completed that mission objective.
Step 5: Move left from the mouth-shaped opening
After the first cleanup, look at the direction the mouth-like opening is facing, then head to the left side.
Follow that path forward and continue until you reach the Angel Comb area.
Step 6: Clear the Viral Bloom on the far side
Before you can use the Angel Comb, keep moving through the area until you find another section covered by Viral Bloom.
Use the Sonic Resonator again and clear that growth completely.
Step 7: Return and clear the last Bloom
Get back into your Tadpole and retrace your path. You will need to clear one more Viral Bloom section.
Once that final cleanup is done, the path is fully ready.
Step 8: Interact with the Angel Comb
Return to the Angel Comb and interact with it. This unlocks the Heat Tolerance adaptation.
After that, you can safely enter hotter areas of the map.
Step 9: Confirm the adaptation unlock
Open the menu and go to Adaptations. Heat Tolerance should now appear in the list.
Important Items
Sonic Resonator
This tool is mandatory for the route. It is used to break every Viral Bloom blocking the path, and you cannot complete the unlock without it.
Viral Bloom
Several Viral Bloom patches must be destroyed during the run. Clearing them removes the parasite effect in the area and opens the way forward.
Black Box Wanderer Area
The unlock route overlaps with the Black Box Wanderer mission location. If you are progressing that objective at the same time, this trip can handle both.
Angel Comb
The Angel Comb is the final interaction point that grants the Heat Tolerance adaptation, but only after the nearby Viral Bloom sections have been cleared.
Tadpole
The Tadpole helps with the backtracking section after clearing the deeper Bloom area. It makes the return route smoother when you need to circle back.
Key Notes and Tips
- The route starts from the Life Pod on a southwest 240 heading.
- Do not go in without the Sonic Resonator.
- Clearing only the first Bloom is not enough. Multiple Bloom clusters must be removed before the adaptation becomes available.
- The Black Box in this zone can be checked during the same trip if that mission is still active.
- If the Angel Comb does not let you unlock the adaptation yet, you likely missed one of the required Viral Bloom clear points.
Tips and Tricks
- Use the large formation, the scientist table, and the bottom opening as your main visual landmarks.
- When orienting deeper in the area, use the mouth-shaped opening as a reference point, then move left to stay on the correct route.
- If you are unsure whether the unlock worked, check the Adaptations menu immediately instead of making another full run.
- Combining this trip with the Black Box Wanderer objective saves time and cuts down on repeated travel.
Summary
Heat Tolerance is unlocked by traveling southwest from the Life Pod, entering the Black Box Wanderer area, and clearing every required Viral Bloom with the Sonic Resonator before interacting with the Angel Comb. Once it appears in the Adaptations menu, you are ready to start exploring the hotter regions of Subnautica 2.
